PREPARING FOR FINALS

Tests are a vital part of academic success. These assessments are important tools to help determine how well a student understands material and accomplishes tasks. They also demonstrate how the student absorbs and interprets information. Knowledge of subject matter is important, however, being ready for exams takes additional preparation. Studying for finals is an activity that requires planning. Students should begin reviewing semester information a couple weeks before final exams. Many teachers provide students with a study guide outlining the material covered from the beginning of the course. If a study guide is not provided, students can create their own by outlining and summarizing class notes. Setting up study groups with classmates is also helpful. The week before exams, students should prioritize another review of coursework. Examine the final exam schedule. Prepare for tests in the order they will be administered. Once a test is over, begin a final review for the next day's exams. Finally, staying up late the night before an exam is ineffective and a waste of time. Students should be well rested and have a good breakfast the day of an exam. Students can easily search the web for a variety of helpful hints on doing well in school by entering the keywords "study skills."
