Message from the Principal - Mr. Frank S. Zarate, Jr.Dear Friends of Morton East High School,
I am proud of the trends we have seen over the past five years in Morton East's Advanced Placement (AP) program. AP programs offer college level courses in high schools throughout the United States. The chart below shows how the AP program at Morton East has grown since 2004 in terms of the number of AP tests given, the number of students enrolled in the AP program, and the number of students earning a passing grade of 3 or higher on the exams.
The growth in the program is due to the "open enrollment" policy we now have in our AP program. Any interested student may be recommended for an AP class by a teacher, a parent, or by the student himself. The AP program includes students from all special programs including Special Education and the English Language Learner program. The AP program is truly a reflection of our student body.
Please note on the chart that in 2005 only 322 AP tests were administered. In 2009 that number rose to 881 tests. In 2004, only ten AP courses were offered in the building; we are now offering sixteen. In 2004 only 102 students earned a passing grade of 3 or higher. In 2009, 268 students earned a passing grade.
Rigor is reflected in our AP courses, and our AP teachers are working diligently to ensure success for all their students. Among the many excellent teachers in this program, Miss Barbara Kane was recently cited by the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics for Excellence in Instruction. We are particularly proud of our students' performance on the AP tests in Calculus, Psychology, Spanish Language (highest in Illinois), and Studio Art. What I Will, I Can!

Very truly yours,
Mr. Frank S. Zarate, Jr. Principal fzarate@east.jsmorton.org (708) 222-5751

Dear Friends of Morton East High School, Throughout the year Morton East receives scholarship opportunities from a variety of organizations, and we compile this information on our school website for students to access. The attached document is what has been accumulated so far this year. Some of the scholarships listed have very specific criteria that need to be met, while other scholarships have general requirements. Also, certain scholarships are open to students in the entire country, while others are only available to students in the Chicago area. For each scholarship within the database there is a brief description of the scholarship requirements, how much applicants can earn if they are selected as a recipient of the scholarship, when the deadline for applying is, and where to find more information regarding the scholarship. This scholarship database is updated as more scholarships are received. The directions to access the Morton East Scholarship Database are as follows: Log onto the school website: www.jsmortonhs.com Select Support Services on the top menu bar Select East Counseling Office on the left menu bar Scroll down toward the bottom of the page until you see Morton High School Scholarship Database 2009-2010 Click on the icon to open the scholarship database page Please share this information with your seniors. Also, local scholarships (those open to Morton East students only) will become available in the spring time. More information regarding these opportunities will follow. Thank you, Ryan M.
