| Morton Freshman Center Students Unveil Environmental Tree Project at Cicero Community Center |
In recognition of both Earth Day and Arbor Day, students from the Morton Freshman Center’s ESL/Bilingual Health Classes, led by teacher Angela Barrera, initiated a project researching the benefits of trees to urban communities and the people that inhabit them. After completing their research, the students then collected scrap paper from around the school and their homes to construct a 8-foot-tall tree, composed entirely of recycled materials, that was recently unveiled at the Cicero Community Center. Each leaf on the tree contained a different fact about trees and their vital importance to public health in urban areas.
Participating students (pictured, along with teacher Angela Barrera) were: Rosa Brenda Ortega, Andres Mora, Mario Rodriguez, Nadia Sosa, Barbara Ortiz, Maria Oriedo, Maria Fernanda Rameriz, Francisco Flores and Arleth Tarin.
J. Sterling Morton, the namesake of the Morton Freshman Center and Morton High School District 201, founded Arbor Day in 1872.
