Two Morton East Seniors Are Off To M.I.T.
Two of Morton East's top seniors from the class of 2009 will be heading off to college in Massachusetts in the fall. They will be attending the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology, better known to engineering students simply as M.I.T. Edgar Matias and Steven Carreno received their acceptance letters just this past week.

Steven and Edgar are both planning to pursue degrees in different fields of engineering; Steven in Aerospace Engineering and Edgar in Biomedical Engineering. They couldn't have selected a more highly respected or demanding university than M.I.T., long known as perhaps the top engineering school in the country. Edgar's primary reason for wanting to attend M.I.T. was the challenge that he knew M.I.T. would provide. For Steven, this represents the fulfillment of a goal to attend M.I.T. set back in 8th grade. His sister, Esther, inspired him to pursue mathematics and encouraged him to make M.I.T. his post-secondary goal.

Both students have been highly successful at Morton East and enjoyed their classes here. Steven's favorite classes include Mr. Sweeney's American History and Ms. Kane's AP Calculus. Edgar also mentioned his AP Calculus class as a special challenge, but also enjoyed AP Chemistry with Mr. Falicetti, and two history classes as well, Ms. Crownson's European History and Mr. Sweeney's American History. Kudos to Ms. Crownson and Mr. Sweeney for challenging Edgar and Steven to their fullest, and making "history come alive" for them, and to all of their teachers and instructors for their hard work and dedication to education and helping their students realize their dreams.

As might be expected, both Steven and Edgar have GPA's well over 4.0 and have successfully met the challenge of honors and AP courses here at Morton. As they move on to a new challenge at M.I.T. we wish them well and have every confidence that they will be exemplary representatives of Morton East in their college and future careers.

Morton High School District 201 Board President Jeffry Pesek and Board Members Joseph Keating, Jessica Jaramillo-Flores, Laura Martin-Salazar, Derek Dominick and Mike Iniquez extended their congratulations to these two exceptional students on their high school accomplishments and wished them the best as they move on to represent the Morton community at prestigious M.I.T.
