Items collected included hand towels, washcloths, wide-tooth combs, nail clippers, bars of soap, packaged toothbrushes and band-aids. After collecting and packaging items in Ziploc baggies, they were able to send off 212 relief kits for the people of Haiti.

Eukovich returns to coach Morton softball
2/26/2010 1:00:00 AM
By Ryan Long -Cicero Life
Tom Eukovich was looking forward to a spring season away from the softball diamond, which was the result of the Berwyn resident retiring after 25 years with the Morton softball program at the end of the 2009 campaign.

Eukovich's reasons were attributed to wanting to watch his sons play baseball. Tommy will be a senior on Morton's varsity while Alex is in eighth grade at Freedom Middle School and plays travel ball.

It hadn't happened since 1991.

But Peter Holanda and the Morton boys swimming team are now writing a new chapter in the program's history after qualifying for this weekend's state meet in two events.

Holanda qualified individualy in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:00.99 at Saturday's Fenwick sectional. He also joined teammates Patrick Uphues, Eric Bales and Eddy Puskaric to finish third in the 200 medley relay with a qualifying mark of 1:40.03.

During his 17 years with the Morton wrestling program and 11 seasons as head varsity coach, Steve Eckert has never had an individual place at the state tournament.

But with the Mustangs sending three qualifiers to Champaign this weekend, Eckert is hoping that this drought will be worth the wait.

"As usual, it's going to be a tough field down there," Eckert said of the state meet. "We're aiming for a great showing."

Saturday was a good day for the program.

Morton wrestling coach Steve Eckert was more than satisfied after his squad produced two champions and three additional sectional qualifiers during the Class 3A Lyons Township regional last weekend.

Eckert's mantra always has been to go six minutes and see what happens. Those five qualifiers get to put that philosophy to work at this weekend's De La Salle sectional.

Walk on, rise up

DePaul men's basketball head coach Tracy Webster never recruited freshman Joe Belcaster.

A season ago, Webster was an assistant at Kentucky under its former head coach, Billy Gillespie.

Webster eventually made the move to DePaul as an assistant last April following Kentucky's decision to go in a different direction and hire current head coach John Calipari and his staff.

Meanwhile, back in Chicago last March, then-DePaul head coach Jerry Wainwright was receiving e-mails and videos from Belcaster, who was a senior point guard at Wainwright's alma mater Morton.
