America: States of distress8/13/2010 4:00:00 PM By Hal Weitzman and Nicole Bullock
-Financial Times
By Tuesday August 10, the state of Illinois is supposed to send Michael Kuzniewski a cheque for $1.5m. He is not holding his breath.
As superintendent of education for Illinois' high school district 201, Mr Kuzniewski oversees the teaching of 9,000 pupils in Chicago's western suburbs. The district has an annual budget of $100m - of which $35m comes from the state.
Cash-strapped Illinois, however, is five months behind on paying its bills. It still owes the district $3.6m from the last academic year and - because it hopes to cut $300m from its schools budget this year - the state cannot say how much it might hand over.

Beatriz embraces big switch5/21/2010 4:00:00 PM By Ryan Long

Beatriz Hernandez is making her coach look very smart.
At the start of the season, Morton's girls soccer coach Tim Drews said that the more third-year varsity member Beatriz Hernandez embraced her new role as a midfielder/defender, the more the former forward would benefit the team.
So far this season, Drews has been right.

Like many of today's college students preparing for a competitive job market after graduation, Zach Clements wants to separate himself from the competition.
The Saint Xavier University baseball team's right fielder, who is majoring in accounting, received a boost to his credentials April 26.
After he and his team returned from a doubleheader at Trinity Christian College that day, the senior quickly changed clothes to attend a ceremony where he was named Saint Xavier's Male Student-Athlete of the Year.
Two Morton seniors to play rugby overseas4/23/2010 3:00:00 PM By Ryan Long

Mike Waszkowski and Manny Aranda would like to put the Morton rugby program on the map.
But they're not just talking about the Illinois map. The two seniors are taking rugby back to its roots.
One major perk of being named to the U-19 all-state team last season is that Waszkowski and Aranda get to represent the Mustangs in a series of matches during a 17-day tour of England, Ireland and Wales beginning on July 21.
Morton High School Baseball Preview4/9/2010 2:00:00 PM By Ryan Long

When former Morton varsity head coach Jim Tsenes resigned last October after eight seasons on the job, he suggested Scott Horodecki as a logical replacement.
Horodecki is a Cicero resident and played catcher for the Mustangs during their last sectional title run in 1994. He went on to play baseball at Morton College and eventually played two more years at Chicago State.
After bouncing around various assistant coaching positions with Riverside Brookfield, Oak Park-River Forest and Morton, Horodecki is now the man in charge for Morton baseball.
Girls soccer preview: Morton ready after strong offseason3/19/2010 4:00:00 PM By Ryan Long

Last summer gave Morton coach Tim Drews a lot of hope for this season. Drews said the Mustangs performed better at their offseason camp than any other group over the last four years.
"The team cohesion continues to grow," Drews said. "We're looking forward to improving and are excited for our first game."
Morton is coming off a third-place finish in the West Suburban Gold a season ago after losing in overtime to runner-up Hinsdale South. Lyons Township ended Morton's season with a 4-1 defeat in a Class 3A regional championship, however, the Mustangs trailed just 2-1 at halftime.
