Introduction What is a school board? A governmental body with the responsibility of providing educational programs for children. The board members are state officials who live within school district boundaries and are elected to serve four-year terms.
What do school boards do? The most important thing a school board does is to establish a vision for the district that reflects a consensus of the board, community and district staff. The school board has a wide variety of additional responsibilities, such as adopting a balanced annual budget and issuing interim financial reports, adopting the school calendar, negotiating contracts with employee unions, approving curriculum materials and closing or constructing schools.
Is the superintendent a board member? The superintendent is a professional educator employed by the board to carry out adopted policies and be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the district. The superintendent must implement the vision established by the school board within the district.
When are the board meetings? The board meets monthly usually on the second Wednesday of the month usually at Morton East at 7:00 PM. The agenda, calendar, and meeting summary are posted under the Board of Education Web Page.
Where are the board meetings held? Meetings are held at Morton East High School, 2423 S. Austin Boulevard, Cicero, IL. Meetings generally take place in the Staff Cafeteria on the first floor.
